Caring for our communities and respecting the hands and minds that make our teas, and their families and ensuring everyone’s well-being is at the heart of what Silverback Tea stands for.

When it comes to the local communities, Rwanda is a model for gender equality. 50% of our workforce is made up of women.

In conjunction with its partners in the tea buying fraternity, Silverback Tea Company invests in local education and infrastructure, including Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs, to create a sustainable future for its workers and their families. The ECD program supports children’s growth. It  focuses on good nutrition, physical health, cognitive skills, social-emotional development, and cultural identity. It promotes improved health through nutrient-rich diets, encourages physical activity through games in the Right to Play initiative, and ensures a healthy environment with Water, Sanitation and hygiene.

Our tea estates engage in several welfare projects in the neighbouring community.

In Gisovu, In collaboration with local authorities, Gisovu Tea Company has contributed to rural electrification, construction and repairs to bridges and roads, health centres and schools. Tea Company has also partnered with Taylors of Harrogate, Cricket Builds Hope and the Rwanda Cricket Association in the introduction of cricket to surrounding communities.

 

 

Water projects have been constructed that have brought drinking water to communities that had to walk long distances for it, A pipeline has been installed to enable 600 families in the village better access to water resulting in reduction in illness and disease.

Pfunda Tea Company is a source of vocational training, research, sustainable tours and educational tours to tea lovers, students of different institutions and universities.

Since the year 2021, more than 100 students completed their internship, 6 completed their research while 50 students visited on educational tours. The factory also supports the youth in developing talent through sports activities.

 

 

Silverback Tea –  Pfunda Estate have organized Aids awareness camps, constructed basketball courts and made water tank, benefiting about 200 families.

 

For visitors, the company offers immersive tours where participants can dress as tea pickers and engage in tea harvesting, providing both educational and photographic opportunities. 

 

Rugabano Tea Company has an established early childhood development centre that accommodates 15-20 children between the ages of 1-6 years. The children’s nutritional and educational needs are taken care of as their parents work in the estates during the day.

Silverback Tea Company has an initiative of growing trees in its estates and catchment areas to improve the microclimatic conditions. Through these efforts, Silverback Tea Company continues to produce some of the most sought-after teas in the domestic and on the international market, while driving positive change for farmers and communities.
